This course meets the qualification for 1 hour of continuing education for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Course credit will be awarded only for actual instructional time. Certificate of completion will be given at the end of the course with participants turning in a complete evaluation.

Van Ethan Levy is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. Van Ethan Levy maintains responsibility for this course and its contents.

Workshop Description:

This workshop provides mental health professionals with tools on how to assess and write a letter for trans/non binary/non-conforming and/or many more non cis clients for surgery/hormones/name change/gender marker change and more in one session. Participants will also learn trauma informed ways to engage with the trans/non binary/non conforming/ and many more identities. Participants will leave the workshop with a wealth of knowledge and accessible tools to assess and write a letter for clients so that the client can gain access to affirming care.

Target audience:

LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. Interns from these fields may participate with a letter from their supervisor.

Content: 50 minutes of a prerecorded training with Q&A, PowerPoint & letter templates. A free follow-up 15-minute consultation for those who have further questions/comments/concerns can be scheduled by reaching out via email to nomoregatekeeping@gmail.com.

Course objectives:

  • Define gatekeeping;
  • Identify 2 key area of assessment for a gender affirming letter;
  • Identify 2 key pieces of information that are necessary to include in a gender affirming letter;
  • Describe 2 questions that is trauma informed when assessing.

Instructor:

Van Ethan Levy (they/them), LMFT & LPCC is a trans and non-binary therapist.  Van has been an advocate, educator, and activist for the trans community since 2000.  Van developed their own curriculum and teaches at North Orange County Education and Antioch University, and is a clinician and a trainer at MiraCosta College. Van provides consultation, trainings, education, and therapy all over the United States & Internationally.  Van is also the author of Exploring My Identity(ies), an interactive book designed for all people and ages to explore their identities and create safer spaces for themselves and others.
