This training deconstructs gender through a trauma-informed conceptualization, focusing on how mental health professionals can recognize and address our own internalized biases. Participants will learn strategies to create safer, more inclusive spaces for clients exploring or affirming the client’s identities.

Course overview:

This course meets the qualification for 2-hours of continuing education for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Course credit will be awarded only for actual instructional time. Certificate of completion will be given at the end of the course with participants turning in a complete evaluation. Van Ethan Levy is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. Van Ethan Levy maintains responsibility for this course and its contents.

Gender is a societal construct with significant emotional, physical, and psychological impacts, especially for those who are trans, non binary, non conforming, and/or who have intersectional identities are so often met with misdiagnoses and inadequate care due to a lack of cultural competency and humility.

This training deconstructs gender through a trauma-informed conceptualization, focusing on how mental health professionals can recognize and address our own internalized biases. Participants will learn strategies to create safer, more inclusive spaces for clients exploring or affirming the client’s identities.

Course objectives:

After completing this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Define internalized and externalized transphobia.
  • Describe three ways in which these forms of transphobia manifest in clinical settings.
  • Describe and implement three strategies for creating a trauma informed and affirming space for clients who are trans, non binary, non conforming, and more non cis identities.
  • Recognize and address at least 3 ways in which your own internalized biases and cultural assumptions show up, in order to improve your practice and interactions with clients exploring or affirming their identity.
