Course overview:
Gender is a societal construct with significant emotional, physical, and psychological impacts, especially for those who are trans, non binary, non conforming, and/or who have intersectional identities are so often met with misdiagnoses and inadequate care due to a lack of cultural competency and humility.
This training deconstructs gender through a trauma-informed conceptualization, focusing on how mental health professionals can recognize and address our own internalized biases. Participants will learn strategies to create safer, more inclusive spaces for clients exploring or affirming the client’s identities.
Course objectives:
After completing this course, attendees will be able to:
- Define internalized transphobia.
- Define externalized transphobia.
- Describe three ways in which these forms of transphobia manifest in clinical settings.
- Describe and implement three strategies for creating a trauma informed and affirming space for clients who are trans, non binary, non conforming, and more non cis identities.
- Recognize and address at least 3 ways in which your own internalized biases and cultural assumptions show up, in order to improve your practice and interactions with clients exploring or affirming their identity.
